The Eagle Has Landed…Literally

February 6, 2012 | 6 Comments

God has really been showering us with treats of the nature variety lately here on our farm on the prairie. Almost two weeks ago this guy showed up….

Our 7 year old granddaughter Faith snapped this picture. She loves photography.

Yes, it is a bald eagle, and he is beautiful! Brad saw him first and then he disappeared for a few days and I was so bummed because I missed him.

Then he came back with a friend.

This pic is blurry, but it was the best I could get before he flew.

My assumption was that this was a female, but I have been told that it is only young. This picture is very graphic, but that is the way of nature. The birds are feasting on a dead coyote. To me, a dead coyote is a good one. Hope that doesn’t offend anyone, but one afternoon this fall I was chiseling cornstalks, and five of the scariest looking coyotes followed me up and down the field chasing down field mice.

I WAS FREAKED OUT!

And very glad to be on a very large tractor in a secure cab with my cellphone ready to call B11 (my husband) if I had any trouble. We have had a couple of large dogs just “disappear” in the past, and I have always wondered if they had a run-in with a coyote. Also, sometimes at night, it sounds as if thousands of them are howling all around us. It is just plain creepy.

This guy means business and I wouldn’t want to mess with him.

The community buzz is that several eagles have been spotted in our county, and I think everyone is hoping they just might stick around.

Our high school mascot is the eagle, so wouldn’t that be cool?

I'm so glad you stopped by my blog so I could come by here! I'm looking forward to exploring your blog. I'm also following you via Pinterest! That thing is so addicting!

There is an eagle hanging out around the ponds where I walk/run every day. He's gorgeous. Until I saw him with a stupid snake and was scared he was going to drop it on my head. I was not laughing that day. Or enjoying his flight. đŸ™‚

Wow cool eagle. I have always wanted to see one in the wild but the only thing I ever saw that big was a California Condor. It was enormous.
I have read about eagles being able to carry off sheep so I bet they could a dog, but I bet a coyote would in a minute. I think I agree with you, it is better that they are gone.
Thanks for your comment today. I think I would almost stay sick my fear of steroids and gaining weight.
My sister started this diet thing with me and lost so fast then got sick and the same thing, just gained so fast. I wish it would fall off as fast when you stopped taking them. đŸ™‚ I hope you are better and don't you just hate the scales?
I weight every Friday morning and it is a battle every time. đŸ™‚
Remember you are not the number on the scale.

I am totally with you on pinterest. I start pinning and before you know it, 30 minutes have flown by!

I walked by the field today, but the eagle was gone. I have to admit I was a little nervous for our little schnauzer, but she came home with me safe and sound!

Thanks for your encouragement, Farm girl! I took my last pill today, and I wasn't ravenous so I take that as a good sign. I'm hoping to get my eating back in control and not obsess about the number. It is hard though, isn't it?

I love Bald Eagles and spent much of my days early last year online watching the hatching and development of the 3 young in the nest in Decorah, Iowa – I was hooked! This year I had to swear off watching and get a life, ha! ha!
Pics are great – they are magnificent birds.

Your countryside tales are so interesting Susan – do you really drive the tractor?

Take care with those coyotes around.
    Hugs – Mary

Hello, Mary! Last year our kids at school checked in on those eagles every day. I never dreamed that we would have eagles nesting in our county this year!

I really do drive the tractor! We have some great people who work with us during the busy, busy season, but I usually get the chance to help out a few days in the spring and fall. I enjoy it as long as I don't have to put in 12+ hour days like the guys do. I think our boys are a little surprised to see their mom man-handling a huge John Deere!
