Sometimes I Make Myself Sick

September 12, 2012 | 13 Comments

Girls, this isn’t going to be pretty, but I feel like I just need to get this off my chest.

I am in the middle of cleaning up after two days of having new carpet laid. We had new carpet put down in 3 rooms, a hallway, and the stairs. Consequently, there is not a room in this house that is not a first rate disaster.

We also decided that this would be a great time to do some room rearrangement. We flip-flopped our dining and family rooms in an attempt to make the best use of every bit of space in this farmhouse. I think it will work out great when it is all finished.

But.

As I clean and sort and dust and polish, I am sickened by the amount of STUFF I have accumulated. I enjoy auctions and resale and junk shops which means I have a lot of  ” this and that” I have brought home with me.

I spent our hard earned money on it.

I really wanted it.

I had to have it.

Didn’t I?

I loved it so much that I brought it home, cleaned it up, put it in a drawer and promptly forgot all about it as I ran out and repeated the cycle over and over.

Shame on me.

I am busy making a pile to take to my daughter-in-law’s garage sale this weekend. She and her small group are trying to raise enough money to fund a trip to a V.A. hospital to visit and help write letters. I will be blessed by helping them, and I will empty out some of the things that I shouldn’t have purchased in the first place.

I pray that the next time my fingers start to itch for something I don’t need or even really want, I will remember this icky feeling and keep my debit card in my purse.

Hugs,

Linking up today to this great party!

I hear you and understand well about the Buying Stuff. I did a major clean out last month and I bet when my own redo is over I find several more boxes of stuff that needs to GO.

they will be happy to have extra stuff to sell and you'll be happy too.

Enjoyed this post. I am a hoarder! Not like you see on TV…Praise the Lord…but I just hoard things up thinking….I am going to use that! I really might need this! And well, you know how the rest of the story goes. I must say that a few years back I finally quit "SAVING" my stuff for something special….I started using all the little things I had HOARDED up…But needless to say I must admit I still need to clean, reorganize, get rid up and revamp! Maybe this post is just what I needed today! LOL! Hugs and blessings, Cindy P.S. Thanks for your visit.

I know what you mean. I am in the process of trying to purge and simplify.

Good old materialism! I do the same thing, buying things that t don't really need Because I feel a draw to them. A Uni lecturer explained to me once how we use material culture to connect to people and places and since then I refuse to feel guilty about it.

Don't be too hard on yourself. The blessing is that you have things to sell to raise money to help those youngens' learn something about giving back. In other words, IT'S ALL GOOD!!! Honor yourself and your loved ones by embracing who you are and knowing that in the end, you are the kind of person that will make sure that some good comes of it! I tip my hat to you fine lady!

    I sicken myself too! Honestly…
Well I love your carpet choice and kudos for tossing some things!

Susan, I think we have all been a bit guilty over this at one time or another. I know I don't need another single thing and I am ashamed of the "wanting". You are putting your finds to a good use, be proud of that!

I never think I have too much to ever give away, but then I look around and I see junk everywhere. Stuff I haven't used in years. It's good to declutter and simplify from time to time. Good job!

I realized how much stuff i accumulated when we moved…it was shocking actually..like 4 sets of sheets for each bed. after I donated the stuff i never went back…so it can be done!! I am proof…and it is simpler and easier now too. good luck!

    Susan,

I agree! I am trying to simplify right now, too and get to projects that are left unfinished and just sitting there.

    Thanks for the reminder!

I feel your pain. It's hard to pass up those fabulous bargains but I feel myself becoming overburdened with "stuff". I cleaned out my basement last year after 16 years of accumulation and boy did that feel great. Need to do it more often to keep the hoarding at bay!

Do I relate. After losing our jobs a few years ago and going without on so many levels for all that time, I have really changed my outlook on stuff. Sure…I still like it and want my home to be pretty. But, I've also learned contentment. And most of all I've come to realize that I bought stuff when what I really needed was more of HIM. What a silly girl I was. I've sold a lot….but even so…we still filled up the giant moving van which too a team of professionals 10 hours to load. Ugh. I think I need to open an online for some stuff. Whew.
