A Big Deal
A few weeks ago, my sister Amy and I were in St. Louis. We had just enough time for a few minutes at Target, which to most people would be no big deal. But remember? I live way in the countryside and the nearest Tarjay is over an hour away.
A visit to this store is a treat to us!
I was browsing the Easter display at the front of the store when I was joined by a young mom with two little ones in the cart. One of the little girls was asking her mom about Easter. Her mom laughed and said, “You don’t know why we celebrate Easter, do you?” Then she proceeded to explain all about the Easter bunny and hiding eggs and baskets.
I wanted to cry.
Who will tell these sweet babies the truth? Easter isn’t about a big bunny and Reese’s chocolate eggs, my spring treat of choice.
Fast forward to today.
I spent time today with one of our daughters-in-law and our sweet little granddaughters. We talked about Easter, and those little girls know the truth. Even the youngest told me about Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and raising from the dead. I know she is too young to really understand, but still. There is no greater lesson than this.
I am so grateful that my son and his wife are raising their children in church. What a wonderful gift they are giving to them!
If you are reading this and used to attend church, please go back! Give your family an opportunity to hear the truth so that they can make up their own minds. Don’t decide for them by leaving it all to chance that someone will share the gospel with them.
I have grappled with whether or not I should have spoken up at Target to gently speak the truth in love about why we celebrate Easter.
Anyway, I didn’t. I pray someone else will come into the lives of that sweet little family who is braver than I was that day.
Romans 5:8

Susan

Very poignant post. I think you did the right thing in Target…maybe the mother is waiting for the little one to get a little older. And hopefully, the mother, father or someone in their lives will explain to them the true meaning of Easter.
Wishing you the most wonderful day tomorrow!

Jane

Bless you for this post! I join you in your prayer for that little family. May someone share with them the REAL meaning of Easter.
I think you're very brave for writing this. Perhaps a number of people will read your account of wanting that sweet family to know about Christ and will be inspired to seek Him. 🙂
Thanks so much for joining Grace at Home!
